MSP-H8 FX S/O 8-Line PCM Interface

The MSP-H8 FX S/O Media Gateway is a full-size PCI board with 4, 6, or 8 high-performance analog trunk interfaces. Four office interfaces (FXO) are on the board, supporting a loop-start connection to a PBX or a CO. There are two two-port daughterboard sites that can accommodate either office or station interfaces (FXS), supporting the connection of phones or fax terminals. No external power is required for the station interfaces.

A TI TMS320C5409 DSP is included for use as a control and media processor. When used as a control processor only, all media processing is performed on the host. The MSP-H8 FX S/O offers the ultimate in per-port affordability by taking advantage of the high MIPS ratings of PCs by eliminating the need for DSPs on the telephony interface board. However, the board's DSP is often used to support line echo cancellation.

Included are the high-resolution 16-bit linear codecs with the low-distortion characteristics needed for high-speed modems, such as Commetrex' V.34 fax modem. The PCM data are buffered and transferred to the host PC via an efficient PCI plug-and-play interface.

The board is available with the MSP-H8 FX S/O Board-Level Developer's Kit, which supports development for any proprietary application. The Board-Level SDK gives the developer the same tools Commetrex' engineers use to develop board-level software.

The MSP-H8 FX S/O is also available with the optional OpenMedia media-processing software environment. OpenMedia is a comprehensive multi-stream software environment that permits media-processing vendors to develop to one open, portable environment, rather than for multiple proprietary environments that lack the potential of broad market coverage. With the OpenMedia SDK the MSP-H8 FX S/O becomes an open hardware-software environment for the media-processing software developer. It also supports DSP-based signal processing on other members of Commetrex's MSP Media Gateway product family. For example, a system that begins with one MSP-H8 FX S/O with all signal processing performed on the host, can be easily expanded without additional host loading by adding an MSP-640. When used in conjunction with OpenMedia, the MSP-H8 FX S/O can support BladeWare, Commetrex' host-based media-processing software, or various media-processing products from other vendors, integrated with Commetrex' Open Telecommunications Framework® Kernel telephony middleware.

System Overview
The MSP-H8 FX S/O is optimized for applications requiring from 2-to-8 (although it has four ports, it's cost-effective down to two) analog line interfaces. PCM data are managed by a DSP-based I/O processor and transferred between the board and the host computer over a PCI plug-and-play interface. Two dual two-port pluggable analog line-interface modules are available to support station and office interfaces on the same board.

I/O Processor
The I/O processor is implemented on a TI TMS320C5409 DSP. It manages a high-speed synchronous serial port delivering data to and from the CODECs, and also performs trunk supervision. The I/O Processor Module executes tasks dynamically assigned to it by the host processor via the PCI bus. Examples of tasks the I/O Processor will perform are

  • Communications with the Host Processor
  • Communications with the signaling channels
  • Pre-processing of voice and data channels
  • Built-in self test
  • Maintain network signaling state machines

PCI Interface
MSP-H8 FX S/O is a "Plug & Play" (P-n-P) 32-bit, 33-MHz PCI Bus module. The P-n-P architecture allows jumper-free, all-software configurability of the card. It allows the host PC to assign addressing ranges, interrupts, and DMA request lines to each P-n-P card at power-up. P-n-P also allows bus-conflict detection and on-the-fly configuration changes in the event of a conflict. The P-n-P architecture preserves full interoperability with legacy (non-P-n-P) cards, but the mixed system will not be fully auto-configurable. The PCI Bus interface is a single-chip solution implemented using a PCI bus controller. The controller incorporates a PCI slave interface for configuration cycles, accesses to it's internal registers, and access to the I/O Processor HPI interface, providing access to all I/O-processor registers and internal memory. The controller also supports the PCI BUS_LOCK function.

Security Sentinel
The Sentinel combines 1024 bits of EEPROM, a 64-bit secret code, an 8-byte register/control page with up to five user read/write bytes, a 512-bit SHA-1 engine and a fully-featured 1-Wire interface in a single chip. Each device has its own 64-bit ROM registration number that is factory lasered into the chip to provide a guaranteed unique identity for absolute traceability.

Analog Trunk InterfaceThe MSP-H8 FX S/O includes up to 8 programmable analog trunk interfaces. The analog hybrids are capacitively coupled Silicon Labs ProSLICs, which integrate a subscriber-line interface circuit (SLIC), codec, ring Generator, and battery-generation functionality. The integrated battery supply continuously adapts its output voltage to minimize power dissipation to conserve space and improve accuracy, while meeting the requirements of North American, East Asian, and the European CTR-21. Since the MSP-H8 FX S/O is intended for integrated-media applications, including high-speed data modems, 16-bit linear codecs were chosen for the line interfaces.

The DAA includes the following:

  • Programmable line interface
    • AC termination
