Roswell, GA, December 1, 2003 – Developers of an endpoint gateway targeting the small to mid-size enterprise, which typically requires POTS-line interfaces, will benefit from Commetrex' latest upgrade of OpenEndpoint™.  OpenEndpoint, an IP- endpoint licensed-technology suite, now includes a highly optimized implementation of the G.729a/b voice coder (vocoder) for the Texas Instruments TMS320C6200 family of DSPs. G.729a/b is the ITU recommendation for a vocoder that compresses 64-Kbps speech to 8-Kbps. Commetrex' G.729a/b requires only 10 MCPS for duplex operation on a `C6200 DSP. Commetrex has previously shipped OpenEndpoint with support for G.711, G.726, and G.723.1.

The OpenEndpoint algorithms are available in C and `C6000 assembly code. They are also available in TI eXpressDSP? and MSP Consortium M.100 versions. A single low-cost 200-MHz TMS320C6000 DSP provides, for example, 12 non- blocking channels running G.729a/b with OpenEndpoint's echo canceller.

"We're pleased that Commetrex has delivered to the telecom sector an even more comprehensive version of OpenEndpoint by adding G.729a/b," says Marc Wallace, TI's worldwide third-party program manager. "Commetrex' G.729a/b is eXpressDSP compliant, which means an added degree of testing has been completed through TI's compliance program."

Cliff Schornak, Commetrex' CTO explains: "Commetrex' ongoing efforts to help equipment developers avoid investing more time and money than necessary in their new products led to our development of OpenEndpoint optimized for the `C6000. OpenEndpoint will give developers a true advantage when developing voice-fax IP endpoint devices, especially if the product requires a POTS interface."

Commetrex has been steadily building its portfolio of IP-gateway technologies. But with the completion of the OpenMedia streams framework, its G.168-compliant echo canceller, and now a highly optimized version of G.729a/b, the Company has assembled all the elements required for a complete voice-fax endpoint.

The MSP Consortium
The MSP Consortium was founded in 1997 by seven companies to develop and distribute a new computer telephony value-adding interface specification called the Media Stream Processor (MSP). The MSP is defined in the Consortium's M.100 specification of an open environment for media-processing firmware. The Consortium's objective is to add a new layer to computer telephony's value-adding structure at the system-resource level. The specification is creating a new competitive space by finally separating fixed-function "boards", such as "fax boards" and "voice boards" into two value-adding layers: the hardware resource with its MSP-compliant software environment and the media-processing software, such as voice processing or the fax modems.
