Atlanta, GA, VON Fall 2002 Show, October 7, 2002 – Commetrex Corporation announced today, the immediate availability of BladeWare™, its IP media server based on host signal processing and the new economics introduced by blade servers. Commetrex has teamed with Diversified Technology, Inc., a leading manufacturer of blade servers, to demo this new product at Fall 2002 VON, taking place October 7-10 in Atlanta, GA. The product, comprised of Commetrex’ OTF® Kernel, OpenMedia™, and IP-media technologies, allows the system developer to implement high-capacity media servers and service platforms without the need for DSP-resource boards.

Mike Coffee, Commetrex’ CEO, seemed pleased at the prospect of marketing the new product: "We believe the benefits offered by this server architecture will be appreciated by the system developer and server provider, both enterprise and carrier. With all stream processing performed on the host, system expansion becomes a snap with the transparent processor-expansion feature of OTF Kernel combined with the ease of PC additions made possible with blade servers. This means a small footprint for space, power, and cooling, and a small footprint on the service provider’s capex budget, too. Server blades cost a heck of a lot less than hot-swap DSP boards, and nearly equal them in per-slot capacity."

Cliff Schornak, Commetrex’ CTO, explained: "Four technologies have converged to permit this advance: client-server telephony middleware, multi-channel integrated-media streams frameworks, ultra-fast micro-processors, and, of course, the blade server. Open Telecommunications Framework?, our open system architecture, features two software systems that are both prerequisites: OTF Kernel and OpenMedia. OTF Kernel is an open-standard-based telephony middleware product that brings the system the necessary distributed architecture. Applications and stream-processing resources can reside on any server of which there can be any number and added at any time. OpenMedia is our open-standard-based media-streams environment that supports stream processing on a server as well as embedded resources. These products are used to harness the MIPS available on multi-giga-hertz processors that deliver the port densities of several DSPSs. And, of course, the extensibility of blade-server architecture is critical for high-capacity applications."

"Blade servers, which have been announced by many of the top computer vendors, offer the ease of expansion a host-based media-server architecture needs", continued Schornak. Simply slide a hot-swap server blade into the chassis and let OTF Kernel’s system administrator know about it. OTF Kernel’s system-level resource manager will give it the appropriate work assignments."

Steve Given, VP, Engineering for DTI said, "There is a good fit between our product and BladeWare. We hope to provide our mutual customers with a faster, more- efficient way to optimize and accelerate the design process. The VON show should provide the opportunity to demonstrate the ease of adopting the CompactPCI processor and packaging, and open- systems architecture. Our blade server maintains compatibility with the ubiquitous PC while providing a more reliable, available, and serviceable platform. Higher system performance, /throughput, and availability isare provided with its support of multiple processors, ease of processor upgradeability and extensibility with given thea passive backplane architecture."

Commetrex, which is offering the software to OEMs that are developing products for both enterprise and carrier applications, says the system is also capable of supporting PSTN-based applications completely transparent to the application.
