Seattle, WA, VON Spring 2002 Show, April 8, 2002 – Commetrex Corporation and Nuera
Communications are pleased to announce the completion of T.38 interoperability in Commetrex' T.38
Interop Lab. As an ITU-T standard for fax-over-IP communications, T.38 allows multiple vendors to
offer an end-to-end compatible fax relay capability. Commetrex provides no-charge interop testing to
all vendors with fielded T.38-capable gateways. Commetrex and its testing partners believe the
industry will benefit if service providers can assume that T.38-capable gateways from different
vendors will interoperate.
Bill Ingram, Nuera CEO, said, "The testing was done entirely over the public Internet. Together with
Commetrex, we were able to iron out a few differences in the interpretation of the T.38
recommendation before establishing full interoperability. We are glad to participate in a program such
as this that has the potential to benefit our customers while it boosts the industry as a whole."
T.38 specifies a protocol for the transport of fax in real-time over IP networks. With T.38, end users
can send a fax from a PSTN-connected fax terminal. The connection traverses the PSTN to a gateway
that supports T.38. From there, the fax travels over an IP network to a compatible terminal also
supporting T.38. Then, the fax can be terminated in an IP-media server or relayed to a corresponding
PSTN receiving fax terminal.
Mike Wells, who heads the Lab's testing operations, added: "We are pleased that Nuera decided to
take advantage of our service. We can now add the ORCA® GX series to the growing list of
interoperable T.38-enabled gateways. We've posted the results on the T.38 Interop Lab Forum on our
Web site at http://www.commetrex.com/T38LabForum.html.
Commetrex has completed interoperability testing with several companies' T.38 products and found
that many interoperability problems are caused by different interpretations of the T.38
recommendation. Commetrex' centralized testing facility, combined with the Lab team's expertise in
interop testing accelerates interoperability, and all findings are communicated to all participants,
without compromising any confidences.
