Nuera Achieves Interoperability
Nuera Communications, Inc. has completed T.38 interoperability testing in Commetrex' no-charge T.38 Interop Lab.  Nuera is a leading provider of Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) infrastructure solutions that work over media such as cable, wireless, copper, and fiber.  Commetrex, Nuera, and other testing partners believe the industry will benefit if service providers can assume that T.38-capable gateways from different vendors will interoperate.
Bill Ingram, Nuera CEO, said, "The testing was done entirely over the public Internet.  Together with Commetrex, we were able to iron out a few differences in the interpretation of the T.38 Recommendation before establishing full interoperability.  We are glad to participate in a program such as this that has the potential to benefit our customers while it boosts the industry as a whole."
The link to the T.38Lab Forum containing detailed testing results and other details can be found at http://www.commetrex.com/

Interested in participating? Call Mike Wells, the Lab's lead engineer, at +1(770)449-7775 ext. 380 or e-mail him at mwells@commetrex.com.  There is no cost involved.

H.323 Version 4.0 Requires T.38
According to Recommendation H.323 Version 4, Annex D, T.38 is required for Release 4 conformance.  According to the Recommendation, support for fax shall be provided by T.38.  The relevant paragraph is reproduced below.
D.2 Scope
The scope of this Annex is to use H.323 procedures to transfer T.38 packets in real time over the IP network.  H.323 entities supporting facsimile capabilities shall use T.38 to support real-time facsimile services as described in this Annex.
This presents vendors with a problem: Although G.711 produces messy, high-error-rate faxes, it has the benefit of interoperability.  On the other hand, T.38 produces clean faxes, but presents an interoperability problem.  T.38, having been released in 1998, is a relatively new standard.   A service provider that intends to use T.38-capable gateways from multiple vendors simply cannot assume interoperability.  This prompted Commetrex to found the T.38 Interop Lab to provide the industry with a clearinghouse for testing and the posting of results.  A vendor will be able to visit this forum to quickly learn whether a product has been tested and what equipment with which it is interoperable.

Interstar Ships TerminatingT38 on Value-Adding Service Platform
Congratulations to Interstar Technologies, Inc., a recent recipient of Technology Marketing Corporation's 2002 INTERNET TELEPHONY® Conference and Expo 'Best of Show' award for its XMediusFAX T.38TM.  XMediusFAX T.38 is a fax-over-IP server solution that fax-enables enterprise networks without the need for expensive computer-telephony interface boards or leased analog lines.
Interstar's recipe for success included the best ingredients like Commetrex' award-winning TerminatingT38TM, winner of CT EXPO 2001 'Best of Show' award.  TerminatingT38(tm) is a combination of Commetrex' ITU T.38 and T.30 fax protocol engines, giving the developer of a network-service platform or an enterprise fax server the technology necessary to terminate T.38 (IP network) real-time fax transmissions the same as it would real-time faxes from the PSTN using analog modems.
"Interstar is Commetrex' first customer to ship product using our TerminatingT38 as a main component," says Cliff Schornak, Commetrex' CTO.   "We're especially pleased that they have also received industry recognition for product innovation for a product that includes one of our technologies.  We believe forward-thinking technology solutions like XMediusFax and TerminatingT38 will provide much-needed manna for developers of next-generation IP solutions."
Commetrex offers TerminatingT38 as licensed software for incorporation into your proprietary environments.  TerminatingT38 makes no assumptions regarding the connection setup, such as H.323 or SIP, nor does it assume a particular API for the application software.

From the Voice on The Net (VON) Show Floor
Spring 2002 VON was the place to go to understand the issues affecting the IP Communications industry today.  Last month's show held in Seattle provided a mix of service providers, enterprise customers, and equipment vendors.
"SIP was the buzz word at this year's show.  Everyone seemed interested in getting the latest on SIP," recounted Paul Baron, Commetrex' Director, Worldwide Sales.  "The other buzz word was openness.  Equipment vendors were looking for modular, open systems and products that would plug and play neatly into their strategic platforms.  And this was outstanding for us because we were showcasing a product that fit those criteria perfectly. Our Open Telecommunications Framework® (OTF) Kernel received a lot of positive feedback from show attendees."
Open Telecommunications Framework (OTF) Kernel, is the industry's only telephony middleware software product that conforms to the ECTF S.100 recommendation, and is not tied to the server vendor's hardware.  It's a pure software product designed to support your media-technology and connectivity resources.

T-Minus 12 Days To The MSP-H8
Commetrex' MSP H-8 Media GatewayTM (MSP-H8) sets the standard for affordability for digital-media enterprise servers since it uses host MIPS for media processing.  How about $125 per voice-fax port in high volume?  After 15 years on the market the incumbent's fax board still cost $400-800 per port, high enough to put LAN-based fax servers out of reach for the small-to-medium-sized business.  It shouldn't be that way and Commetrex is doing something about it.  Want to try it, and OTF, our S.100-conforming developer's environment?
"This product concept was customer-driven.  OEMs asked us for a more robust product at a better price, and we've responded with the MSP-H8.   Our goal is to provide leadership to the industry by redefining the low end of the media gateway DSP-resource board market,"says Ben Feldgajer, Director, Embedded Systems Development.

Commetrex Announces Multi-Media IP Endpoint
Commetrex is pleased to announce the availability of a new, multi-media IP endpoint product, OpenEnd(tm).  OpenEnd is a suite of Commetrex' media technologies required to implement a voice-fax IP access device which connects legacy voice and fax terminals to IP-based access networks. The media-processing technologies are packaged in Commetrex' OpenMedia.   An optional software subsystem that handles FXO interfacing is available to complete the package.
"So-called integrated access devices are viewed by some as low-complexity devices," says Bruce Adams, Commetrex' Director, Signal Processing Technology.  "But they're wrong," he continues.  "OpenEnd includes DTMF, G.711, and G.726 for voice.  Low-bit-rate vocoders are optionally available.  For robust fax transport we include all the fax modems and T.38, the ITU standard for fax-over-IP.  Then there's caller ID generation.   The optional POTS interface software completes the package.  Simply add your IP (or AAL2) interface and you're almost ready for market."
For the developer of an IP endpoint, Commetrex' OpenEnd is the recommended foundation.  For more information, contact
